Not a whole lot of change to this bracket, other than putting a few teams in bold font to represent sealed automatic bids, and one more lock.

Oklahoma State is the latest lock, which could have been done yesterday I suppose.  OSU was held up a bit here as it doesn’t quite have the same number of quality wins that most of the other locked teams do.  However, with a match-up against Iowa State in the Big 12 Quarterfinals, the opportunity of a questionable loss heading into Selection Sunday is no longer there.

UNC-Wilmington, East Tennessee State and Iona all sealed up bids last night by winning their respective conference tournaments.  There was no change in any of the three teams’ seeds since yesterday.

Had it lost, UNCW would have been a very interesting at-large candidate. Having lost to Charleston, with an RPI around 60, in what was essentially a road game would not have hurt the Seahawks’ profile too much.   With a 5-4 mark vs the RPI Top 100, and no really bad losses (unlike VCU, Rhode Island or Providence), UNCW could very well have become a dreaded bid-stealer for the power-conference bubble hopefuls.

Daily Update: 6 More Days…

The Monday morning bracket update welcomes two Big East teams to lock territory:  Seton Hall and Marquette.  The Pirates’ massive win at Butler Saturday propelled them in with certainty.  Marquette continued its strong finish with a win at home against Creighton, which gives the Eagles five Top 50 wins and an above-500 record against that group (5-4).  That fits the criteria of a sure tournament team.

Seton Hall and Marquette face each other in the Big East Tourney Quarterfinals, ensuring that neither team can take much of a hit between now and Selection Sunday.

Three more teams earned automatic bids Sunday:  Wichita State, Winthrop and Florida Gulf Coast.  Each moved up one seed from their placements 24 hours ago.  In the case of Winthrop and FGCU, it was thanks to Monmouth’s surprising loss in the MAAC Semifinals.

Daily Update: Mar 5 – One More Week!

North Carolina gets a big win over its archrival, but remains a No. 2 seed for now.  With the loss, Duke switches spots with Florida State, which beat Miami for a second time, on the 3 and 4 lines.  That could flip again next week depending on ACC Tournament outcomes.  FSU will need a Quarterfinal win to stay on the 3 line.

Kentucky moves up to the No. 2 line with a win, and Butler‘s home loss to Seton Hall.  The Bulldogs have a shot to earn that spot back, but it may take a THIRD win over Villanova, which would have to be in the Big East Championship game.

The latest lock honor goes to Saint Mary’s, which took care of Portland in the WCC Quarterfinal round.  With the win and now a looming match-up against BYU, riding high after its win at Gonzaga last weekend, there is no possibility for a “bad” loss for the Gaels at this point.

Daily Update: March 4

Only changes coming in the bottom quarter of the bracket, thanks to Belmont’s letdown in the OVC Semifinal.

UT Arlington (Sun Belt), Cal St Bakersfield (WAC) and Eastern Washington (Big Sky) each moved up one seed line with Belmont knocked out.  Despite a respectable RPI (63), the Bruins have zero chance at an at-large bid (no wins vs the RPI Top 150).

The first bid will be handed out tonight in the OVC Championship, with the winner likely to be a 16 seed.  That could change if FGCU, for example, were to lose in tomorrow’s Atlantic Sun Championship.

Many bubble eyes will turn toward MVC and WCC conference tournament action today, rooting for the likes of Gonzaga, St Mary’s, Wichita State, and perhaps Illinois State.
